Frequently asked questions

What does the acne or fungal folliculitis program entail?

Skin Theory takes a multi-faceted approach to clearing problem skin. Specifics will be discussed during our initial consultation, but generally we focus on three areas:

  1. Home care clearing

  2. Clearing supplements

  3. Lifestyle adjustments

What Ingredients do you USE?

At Skin Theory, we take a healthy approach to clearing skin. For most clients we use a synergy of corrective topicals that are carefully orchestrated into routines and treatments. These can include mandelic (almonds), malic (apples), lactic (dairy), tartaric, glycolic (sugarcane), natural enzymes from papaya and pineapple, salicylic, willowbark, vitamin A, zinc, sulfur, cranberry, benzoyl peroxide, growth factors, niacinamide, kojic acid, arbutin, urea, water or lipophilic vitamin c, peptides to name a few.

ARE YOU ORGANIC?

First, there are various interpretations of organic. Our interpretation may be different from others. Do we carry all 100% certified organic product across all lines we use? No we do not. And there is a very good reason for that. Do we carry some certified organic products? Yes, we do. Did you know for skincare products to be organic they only have to have one ingredient that is organic?

Our ingredient approach: We hand select products & ingredients based on what we consider healthy and effective for our bodies and certain skin conditions. Not all organic ingredients are safe or healthy for the skin, body or certain skin conditions. One example is Oleander Leaf, used in many organic skincare products and yet toxic when ingested.

Another good example of this is eczema-prone individuals. Products that contain plant-based ingredients, typically in organic products, can actually aggravate eczema in individuals prone to this condition. To quote Roman philosopher Titus Lucretius Carus “What is food for one man may be bitter poison to others.” To clear eczema we actually have clients avoid plant-based organic ingredients as they are full of salicylates (natural pesticides plants produce that fend off bugs) in favor of non-plant based ingredients. Some may deem such products with man-made ingredients as “toxic” but just because they are man-made does not deem them toxic - and they help eczema skin immensely. Also, many “organic” sunscreens are not healthy, it is Inorganic zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which are much healthier for your skin. You can find out more about our ingredients we use and don’t use here.

ALLERGIES CAN BE NATURAL

We want to make you aware that we do use many natural-based products that contain tree nuts, dairy and gluten both in our treatments and home care products.

We do not recommend our program if you have a severe allergy to any of these 3 ingredients as we can not guarantee these ingredients will not be used. Why?

Because, the FDA does not regulate allergen labeling for skin care products the same as it does for food, Skin care companies are not required to specifically call out food allergens. When you look at the ingredient deck tree nuts can be “hidden” under all sorts of different names some easy to recognize, some not so easy with long chemical names: mandelic, coconut, shea butter, almond oil, argan oil, prunus amygdalus, bertholletia excels,  aleurites muluccana, pistacia vera/lentiscus, Cola vera, argania spinosam coco-betaine, cocamidopropyl betaine to name just a few. Some are not even main ingredients but yet surfactants that help a cleanser  “foam” or an emulsifier that help ingredients “mix” together such as oil and water. You should consider this and be comfortable with the use of these ingredients..

Are there doctors on staff?

Skin Theory is not a medical facility. Our acne and skin specialists are Licensed Estheticians. Unlike a dermatologist who grades your acne from across the room every few months, we spend a considerable amount of time evaluating each client’s skin type, baseline sensitivity, acne type, lesion type and clearing rate to determine the correct clearing protocol.

who needs to attend The consultation & APPOIntments?

A parent or guardian is required during the consultation if the client is a minor. Consent for both treatments and home care is necessary over the course of the program.  For all subsequent coaching & treatment appointments, only the client will be allowed in the treatment room.

How often do I need to come in during the clearing program?

For most clearing clients, we require you to come in for appointments every 2 weeks.

It is your responsibility to schedule & reschedule appointments when necessary. Missing appointments can lead to delays in the clearing process and stalling. If you do have to miss an appointment for any reason it is your responsibility to contact us so we can discuss your progress over the phone prior to the next available appointment. Clients who cancel with little to no notice may not be able to reschedule for the same week.

Can I be on accutane while participating in the problem skin program?

No. Due to its extreme side effects, you are NOT able to be on Accutane while participating in our skin clearing program. Accutane is contraindicated.. You are unable to apply active topicals to Accutane skin. You must wait 60 days after your last dose of Accutane to begin our clearing program with us. However, we can help with a gentle acne-safe home-care routine to aid in keeping your skin hydrated and prevent scarring from Accutane.

My child picks their skin, Can you clear this?

No, we are unable to clear picking habits. Skin picking continues as it is not caused by acne (though it is made worse).  New clients with picking habits should understand that they will never look clear unless they stop the habit. Parents should be aware we have very little success in clearing and keeping the skin clear with picking habits. It is something to consider when deciding to start our clearing program and is discussed in our consultation to help you make the right decision if this is an issue.

Do you accept insurance?

No, we are unable to accept insurance.

How old does my child need to be to begin the acne or Folliculitis Clearing program?

There is not a minimum age.
